A useful fit for

A candidate for an XL screened hang where the buyer specifically wants a two-layer bottom intended to retain Hennessy's separate Double Bubble Pad XL; the standard package also includes its rainfly and 42-inch tree-hugger straps.

The main tradeoff

The separate pad is needed for the designed insulation arrangement, the package is listed at 3 lb 8 oz before straps, and the 42-inch webbing may not work for every site. Hennessy's Woodland and customized offers differ in included fly or strap length.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What is the Jungle Explorer XL's listed body size and capacity?

Hennessy gives bottom-fabric dimensions of 130 by 59 inches, a 7-foot user-height limit and a 300-pound hammock limit. Those values are not a personal sleep-fit finding or complete-system rating.

Is the insect screen integrated into this hammock?

Yes. The exact product page lists attached 30D No-See-Um mesh; the net is an insect layer, not the stock rainfly or insulation pad.

Are the hammock's straps and pad both included?

The standard package includes 42-inch tree-hugger webbing, but the Double Bubble Pad XL is named as a separate purchase designed for the double bottom. Check the live package list.

The Jungle Explorer Zip XL is the Explorer family's larger one-person hammock with a double-layer bottom designed to hold an insulation pad. That layered bottom—not a claimed temperature rating—is its main distinction from the one-layer Explorer Deluxe Zip XL. Hennessy lists the model for users up to 7 feet tall and the hammock to 300 pounds. The reviewed standard-rainfly configuration is the Bark, side-entry Zip SKU M38, not the separately listed Woodland version with a larger fly and longer webbing.

A pad-retaining bottom changes the use plan

Hennessy describes two tightly woven 40D nylon layers at the bottom and says the Heat Reflecting Double Bubble Pad XL fits between them on attachment points. The pad is sold separately; the hammock body alone does not provide that insulation. The layered pocket is useful if your trip plan already centers on that pad, because the manufacturer says it holds the pad on the intended diagonal and prevents movement. It also means you should not treat an unrelated pad or underquilt as an automatically compatible substitute. Check Hennessy's specific fit information before building the rest of the system.

The product page lists 130-by-59-inch lower-fabric dimensions, a packed weight of 3 pounds 8 ounces before the 4-ounce tree-hugger straps, and a packed size of 5 by 6 by 11 inches. The comparison chart also gives a 3-pound-8-ounce packed figure, a 7-foot/300-pound Explorer XL limit, and a two-layer bottom. These consistent points help distinguish the model, but they do not turn its packed weight into a measured trip load: a rainfly, supplied webbing, insulation, personal sleep kit and other carried equipment matter.

Screen, entry and stock weather cover

M38 is a Zip model with a two-slider #10 YKK side closure and attached 30D no-see-um mesh. The standard product page says the order includes the stock rainfly, support ropes, compression sack and free 42-inch tree-hugger webbing. Hennessy says the mesh is attached and mosquito-protective; the extra layer under the hammock is not a substitute for that screen. The included fly addresses overhead coverage, not cold air under the hammock, and the maker's compatible Double Bubble pad remains an extra line item.

The 130-inch dimension is a bottom-fabric measurement; converted for the site's numeric finder, it is about 10 feet 10 inches. It meets a 10.5-foot minimum but not an 11-foot threshold. The 59-inch width and 300-pound limit are manufacturer-listed values, not a personal fit test or whole-system rating. Hennessy also lists 10-foot, 1,800-pound-test polyester-core ropes and 2-inch-by-42-inch webbing. Rope test strength and hammock capacity refer to different components and should never be read as a combined rating.

Standard versus Woodland and customizable versions

The standard M38 listing includes its stock rainfly and standard webbing. Hennessy lists a separate Jungle Explorer Woodland product with a larger hexagonal fly and longer Tree Huggers. It is not a finish-only duplicate for trip planning: additional fly coverage and strap reach affect the package and its packed plan. The manufacturer also offers a customized body-and-webbing product with several strap lengths; that listing is not this stock-rainfly M38 configuration. Confirm the exact version, fly and strap length in the live cart rather than assuming the family name settles it.

The comparison chart places this XL alongside models with other bottom designs. Explorer Deluxe is one layer and suited to a simpler pad-independent arrangement; 4Season Explorer is another double-layer system with a different foam-pad and storage plan. Jungle Explorer is the one whose manufacturer text specifically describes the Double Bubble Pad XL held between its two bottom fabrics. The category label “Jungle” is not an independent test of insect conditions; use the stated screen, zipper and actual site exposures when planning.

Tradeoffs and buying checks

At 3 pounds 8 ounces before straps, this is not the lightest option for a weight-sensitive trip, and its pad is a separate purchase. Its benefits are the XL size, attached insect mesh and a documented route to keep a named pad in place. Those features only help if the tree spacing, suspension and exact pad work for your trip. Hennessy's 42-inch webbing may not reach around every permitted tree or cover every spacing; check the actual support site and choose only maker-supported components.

No hands-on setup or field performance test was performed. This assessment follows Hennessy's product page and comparison chart. Verify the M38 package, included fly and straps, exact compatible insulating pad, current instructions and returns before ordering. The stated 300-pound body limit does not rate the included rope, webbing or anchors, and the listing provides no independently tested temperature or comfort guarantee.
